Practicum experience
I enjoyed my last practicum with Sandeep Sharma, MD, PC office, working with him, his colleague, the office staff and then working with his patients with asthma. Participating in the practicum provided me with significant opportunities to practice and gain leadership and communication skills. These skills are acquired from other people while in the field. Practicum offers a wonderful opportunity for one to be able to get hands on the experience that is in a positive environment of learning. Practicum allow students to have a view of the first hand about how the experience of working in the field can be like. The content that was previously covered in the course work is provided with valuable lessons about which probably cannot be taught in lectures (Crookes, 2003 p.34).
Competence is evaluated developmentally and this is based on how the student is trained and the experience gained. There are shifting thresholds on what is to be considered as an experienced behavior, such a practicum experience therefore is considered to be successful. Evaluation of practicum is aimed at getting to evaluate the performance of the student and how satisfied this student is to the experience gained from the practicum. The evaluation of the preceptor and that of the advisor is very important in the process of evaluating the experience gathered from the practicum as well as the practicum site (Hedge & Davis, 2005).
Prior to the practicum rotation, the university reviews several aspects of the plan such as:
Objective plans of the practicum
