It is incontestable that sense perception plays a crucial role in the natural sciences. It
serves as the sole means through which we can gather information about the world around
us. Knowledge of general laws is posterior, in the empirical sciences, to knowledge of
particular instances, and for the latter the evidence of the senses is required.
