MYP Y10 Sciences – Use of Biotechnology Research task and Poster

Recently you have been studying about the function and structure of DNA and about the process of cellular division and how it can lead to inheritance. Over the last 50 years humans have made large jumps forward in their ability to understand what DNA does and how we can use that knowledge to change our DNA to enhance the quality of our lifestyle. Choose a problem that has possible solutions using genetic engineering or biotechnology and after researching a solution, produce a poster up to A1 in size to present your findings. You should make use of text and images, using in-text citations where appropriate, and all text should be submitted seperately to Turnitin.com . You could assume that this poster could be found in a hospital or doctor’s office to help potential patients. The poster should:

discuss the problem which may be helped by your chosen biotechnology process;
explain the scientific principles behind the biotechnology process;
discuss and evaluate the positive and negative issues associated with the use of your chosen biotechnology process, relating to one factor from the following: moral, ethical, social, economic, political, cultural or environmental;
express all your ideas in appropriate scientific language.
document your sources thoroughly and correctly (works cited should be on a separate sheet (stuck to the back of the poster) – but in-text citations must be on the poster).

In this assignment, you will need to use many Approaches to Learning (AtL) skills, such as locating and presenting information gained from a variety of sources (at least 3 different types of source), and acknowledging sources in an MLA-style works cited list with in-text citation. You will be expected to submit your poster’s text to Turnitin.com for an originality check.

Use EasyBib or bibme.org to help with your works cited.

You will be assessed on Criterion D (Reflecting on the impacts of science) according to the rubrics below.
