Part A
Identify and analyse the organisation of talk and features of language use in a teaching situation. At least three people are to be engaged in natural talk for that context in English or another language, with authentic protocols and turn-taking occurring. Observe all academic conventions.
Steps:
•    Seek written permission from the participants guaranteeing them confidentiality. Provide the letter of permission you wrote to the participants requesting their permission to record their talk (as an Attachment).
•    Make a recording of the talk in the teaching session. Listen to the whole recording session.
1.    Name the setting, recording date, purpose of the talk, role of participants in the talk context. Provide permission letter. Use pseudonyms (not numbers) in place of authentic names on the transcript e.g. “Sami”, ”Aris”, “Taka”, “Jim”. Include a transcription key. Transcribe 4 minutes only of the talk during the teaching session with numbered turns that demonstrate the patterns of spoken text in the session.
2.    Place the transcription in a table of turns for analysis. Use Conversation Analysis (CA) tools to label samples of adjacency pairs, preferred organisation, any dispreferred organisation providing a linguistic analysis of the exchanges as annotated comments in a right hand column.
3.    Identify and label samples of the discourse features: Communication Constraints, Speech Acts, Maxims of Cooperative Communication on the table alongside the turn sample;
4.    Locate and analyse examples of implicature, using Maxims of Cooperative Communication.
5.    Provide an overview of the analysis from the findings.

Part B
Select a written text * on a social issue. Construct an analysis of the genre and significant discourse features of the text. Provide a Critical Discourse Analysis approach to the issues of language-in-use.
Observe all academic conventions: accurate syntax including spelling, punctuation and APA referencing.
*Choose the written text from one of the following:
•    a student’s essay,
•    a novel, play,
•    newspaper article,
•    written justification or a written argument,
•    story, school newsletter,
•    community newsletter,
•    minutes of a meeting,
•    canteen rules, a textbook in use,
•    oration,
•    Or other written genre (by negotiation with the examiner).
1.    Provide a published copy of the selected text and cite it. Produce a second legible copy of the text in Word with a system of line numbers.
2.    Prepare an analysis with samples from the text of the genre structure, plus features of cohesion and reference using a discourse grammar or a functional grammar.
3.    Discuss socio-cultural aspects of the text using a Critical Discourse Analysis approach, citing relevant samples from the text.
