THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO
In these short essays, you will respond to the texts at hand (see below) via the following question: What does this text contribute to the social sciences? To
paraphrase, you wish to examine the ways in which these texts explore issues relevant to the development of the social sciences. Everyone will approach these essays in
a different way, and the best essays will be those that try to capture in a meaningful way something of the breadth and importance of the text at hand. Keep
‘modernity’ and our central themes in mind as you go. Do not do any additional research; these are not meant to be labour-intensive research assignments, but rather to
present an opportunity to engage directly with some important works from the past. Choose your words carefully, make the best use of your three to four pages as you
can, and present an argument. Finally, avoid tangents – aim to display your knowledge of / engagement with the text, along with your critical thinking and
communications skills.
The texts: choose ONE of the following texts from the first set, and ONE from the second set. The due dates correspond to the dates on which we discuss the texts in
class.
