This selection comes from Anne Moody’s eloquent autobiography, the story of a young civil rights worker in Mississippi during the early 1960s. Moody joined the movement led by the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) to register blacks to vote in small towns across the impoverished state of Mississippi. As someone active in the voting rights efforts, Moody faced
constant threats and occasional violence from local whites, including sheriffs, deputies, local citizens, and the notorious Ku Klux Klan, as well as deep suspicion from local blacks who feared their involvement with the movement would jeopardize their meager livelihoods and the safety of their families. After
working for months with no money and limited success, Moody is nearly spent, physically and emotionally.
CORE stands for the Congress of Racial Equality, another civil rights organization that championed the cause of blacks in the South.
