Sharecroppers and Tenant Farmers
Read the Hierarchy of a Plantation in Chapter 6 of the textbook. Consider what we have discussed thus far about class and citizenship. Compare and contrast it to farming in ancient times, in Europe, and with what Crevecoeur and Jefferson believed about what farming offered in terms of class and citizenship.
After reading the “sharecropper’s contract,” discuss why or why not the contract is fair and reasonable. If you don’t believe it is reasonable, what would make it a fair contract.
