It is the “hard numbers” which are of great concern on the street while theorist will typically look at Qualitative to find out why crime occurs. Patrolmen, Law Enforcement Administrators and those who study crime within cities all turn to statistical data in the quantitative form to fight crime and suppress evil. One of the most interesting programs that have been incorporated into many law enforcement agencies, especially those of a significant size, is that of COMSTAT (short for Computer Statistics or Comparative Statistics depending who you ask). The Collier County Sheriff’s Office has a COMSTAT program in which twice a month, a meeting is scheduled between the command staff, district commanders, investigation units, intelligence units and various specialty units (ie Street Gang Unit). The raw numbers of crimes, being Part I crimes captured in the FBI Uniform Crime Report (UCR) are discussed. The location of crimes to include robberies, burglaries, aggravated batteries and various other Uniform Crime Report Part I crimes are mapped in addition to other data related data such as time of day, known persons involved and the type of victim exploited. From this statistical data, plans are developed to attack the problem areas that are identified and reduce crime. ??An example would be a rash of car burglaries occurred at the local mall. The burglaries were reported mostly in the early afternoons with most of the victims being women who left their purses in their vehicles. A plan would be to place mobile announcement signs in the area of the mall with a message reminding people to secure their personal belongings in the trunks of their cars. Plain clothes officers from special enforcement teams could be posted at various locations to surveil for criminal activity while community oriented police officers will provide bike patrols through the mall’s parking lot. The end result would be dictated by the numerical data collected over the two week period.??I list this as an example on how quantitative research is used by law enforcement to combat crime.
Provide an example on how qualitative research is also used to combat criminal activity or what type of national measurement device would be classified as Qualitative?

Political and religious funding on research can have profound impacts on the outcomes of studies. Political, religious and government research funding often implies that the research was paid for in order to produce, through the scientific method, an outcome favorable to the founder. Sometimes on the political side, the research paid for is objective – when a candidate is serious about winning, they may pay a polling firm to see where people are polling on specific issues (probably identified through another paid for research). Religious funding often implies that the outcome is based on what that church is seeking. It’s cynical, but most paid for research is for the benefit of the payee. Its like hearing an oil change is recommended every 3,000 miles. This benefited those who change oil and provide auto parts to support it. Now the recommendation is that it is really every 5,000 miles, to support the global warming crowd. It’s very difficult to sort out what is really fact, true or likely when there is a lot of money at stake.

Qualitative research gathers data that is free-form and non-numeric, open-ended questionnaires, interviews and observations that are not coded using a numerical system. Qualitative data and research is used to study individual cases and to find out how people think or feel in detail. It is a major feature of case studies. Quantitative research gathers data that can be coded in a numerical form. Examples of quantitative research include experiments or interviews/questionnaires that used closed questions or rating scales to collect. Quantitative data and research is used to study trends across large groups in a precise way. Examples include clinical trials or censuses. Qualitative research is more significant to criminological research. With qualitative research you are interviewing real people, observing their body language, and actually hearing what they are saying. With investigations this is something that helps you not only see the person that you are talking to, but you also get to see how they are acting (if they might be lying) about the questions you are asking. The quality of your research is more rounded, and investigative in your research. With Quantitative research it is a controlled environment where there are experiments, closed ended questions, like yes or no answers, and is trend oriented.
