a. Brief description of the technology
•    Robotic surgery is defined as “a method to perform surgery using very small tools attached to a robotic arm. The surgeon controls the robotic arm with a computer” (U.S. National Library of Medicine, 2013);
•    General anesthesia is applied to the patient to ensure that the procedure is painless;
•    The surgeon sits in front of a computer station to view the entire surgical procedure;
•    Small surgical tools are attached to the robot’s arms;
•    Small incision on the patient’s body parts on the surgical cite are made as entry point of the instruments;
•    “A thin tube with a camera attached to the end of it (endoscope) allows the surgeon to view enlarged 3-D images of your body as the surgery is taking place” (U.S. National Library of Medicine, 2013, p. 1); and
•    The robot allegedly matches or replicates the surgeon’s hands during the operation.
b. Brief description of the associated science:
•    The emergence of robotic surgery stems from revolutions under the biomedical field
•    The procedure falls within the minimally invasive surgery approach (Brown University, 2005)
II. Political and legal influences
a. Litigation is complex due to the liabilities that need to be evaluated in terms of participation of three parties: the physician, the hospital, and the maker of the robotic     system (Mavroforou, Michalodimitrakis,, Hatzitheo-Filou, & Giannoukas, 2010).
b. Other factors to evaluate include: “equipment safety and reliability, provision of     adequate information, and maintenance of confidentiality are all of paramount importance” (Mavroforou, Michalodimitrakis,, Hatzitheo-Filou, & Giannoukas, 2010, p.     75).
c. Finally, “the cost of robotic surgery and the lack of such systems in most of the public hospitals may restrict the majority from the benefits offered by the new technology”
