Discussion Question Post:

The reading selection for this Unit contains a large discussion on modern influences on religion (pp.528-544). Topics covered in this discussion are:

Globalized Economy and Politics (the New World Order)

Multiculturalism and Interfaith Dialogue

Women’s Rights

Human Sexuality

Science and Ethical Issues

Secularism

Environmental Challenges

For discussion this week, choose two of these topics to comment upon. One should be important for your own perspective on Religion. The other should be something you had not considered before in terms of its impact on religion.

In each case, reread the relevant section of the textbook, summarize the basic point of the topic, explain why you do or do not identify with the specific concerns of the topic, and suggest why others should see it as more or less important in discussing religion.

Focus on writing well. Support your opinions with fact-reporting where possible and appropriate.

Assignment:

1.      Based on Internet research of reputable sources, what are the current generational differences in attitudes toward the role of religion in America?

2.      Based on Internet research of reputable sources, what are the principal reasons for the proportional decline of Protestant denominations in contemporary America? (Select no more than three denominations to analyze.)
