RAID Implementations
CIS 320 Pencil & Paper Homework 6: RAID Implementations
1. We have 8 disks each with a capacity of 1 Terabyte which we plan to use for storage in a RAID array
a. What will be the storage capacity of our system is we are using:
i. RAID 0
ii. RAID 1
iii. RAID 5
iv. RAID 6
v. Raid 50 with 2 raid 5 sets
vi. Raid 10
b. How many disks can fail without losing data if we are using
i. Raid 0
ii. Raid 1
iii. Raid 5
iv. Raid 6
v. Raid 50 with 2 raid 5 sets
vi. RAID 10
2. Which RAID type or types would you recommend in the following situations:
a. Storage of database files and transaction logs for a crucial database where the primary server room is in an earthquake prone area.
b. Storage of a large archive of pictures and videos that will not change, but where rapid reading of the files is critical.
c. Storage of a large volume of files of varied types where there is a moderate amount of updating of the data where:
i. The system will require 3 Terabytes of storage and we are planning to use 750 GB drives in our RAID array
ii. The system will require 6 Terabytes of storage and we are planning to use 500 GB drives in our RAID array
3. Indicate the values of the missing bits. Assuming each row represents a set of corresponding blocks across the 4 disks and we are writing a block to 3 of the disks and parity data to the 4th with rotation of the disk writing the parity bit. Disk 3 died and we must reproduce its contents. Indicate The values required:
a. Parity bits for 1st block __ __ __ __
b. Reconstructed data for block 2 __ __ __ __
