1) A man sits in a seat that is suspended from a rope. The rope passes over a pulley suspended
from the ceiling and the man holds the other end of the rope in his hands. What is the tension
in the rope and what force does the seat exert on the man? Draw a free body diagram for the
seat and for the man.
2) You are driving down a hill in your car that weighs 500 kg. The coefficient of static friction
between the tires and the hill is 0.2. Find the maximum acceleration that you can achieve. Can
you increase this acceleration if you put a bigger engine in your car?
3) A girl is riding in a circular ring with uniform speed. At the top of the circle, she pulls out an
apple to eat, but it slips out of her hand. How fast should her car be moving so that at some
point down the ring, she can again catch the apple on its way down?
4) The Romans (and others) designed pulley-based cranes which could hoist huge masses, but
were yet human operated. Using the simplest possible pulley system, explain how you can lift a
load without having to apply a force equal to the weight of the load. Also explain whether you
are violating energy conservation in this process.
