Paper: Regeneration by pat barker

Paper: Regeneration by pat barker

choose one of the following prompts and write a  2 and ½ to 3-page paper on it.  Remember to address all parts of the prompt in your essay. Your fourth page will be your Works Cited page.  You must use MacGill Literature database in addition to your own ideas based on your reading of the text and our class discussions. You should have  at least one secondary source. Ensure that the source is peer reviewed. You need to have a thesis statement. Don’t forget to include a Works Cited with both your primary and secondary sources correctly cited using MLA format.  Your primary source is Regeneration, and as you can see, it should be italicized. You should have 3-5 short quotes of no more than 2 lines.

Prompts
•    Discuss the theme of homosexuality in the novel.
•    Discuss the motif of emasculation in the novel.
•    How does the title of Barker’s novel, Regeneration, reflect the novel’s themes?
•    Many reviewers see Sassoon as the main character of the novel; Barker says Rivers is the main character. In your opinion, which of Regeneration’s characters deserves the title? Why?
•    In an interview with Donna Perry, Barker offers a revealing comment about Prior’s character in the novel: “Prior makes the book, I think. It would be too bland without Prior” (Backtalk 55). What does Prior’s character contribute to the novel? Do you agree that he “makes the book” and that it would be “too bland” without him? ( Bland as in boring).
•    Very few reviewers mention Sarah or the other female characters in their discussions of Regeneration. For many, it is as though the female characters aren’t even there.  What if they weren’t there? What is lost by their absence in the novel? What is gained by their inclusion?
•    In her interview with Wera Reusch, Barker says that “the historical novel can be a backdoor into the present.” How does Regeneration provide us with a backdoor into our present culture?
