How to analyse your assignment task

“Step 1 Collect the information about the assignment

Collect all the information about your assignment. This requires careful reading, not only of your assignment task but also your criteria sheet and any other assessment information that may be on your unit blackboard site.

Step 2 Work out the genre of the assignment

Identify the type of assignment you have been asked to write. Make sure you understand the genre (type of writing ) of  your assignment. For example, an essay is written and structured differently from a report; students commonly confuse the requirements for literature reviews and annotated bibliographies; and a critique requires you to do more than simply provide a description. Check the panel on the left for more examples of typical genres.

Step 3 Identify the key words in the assignment

Consider the language of your question. Assignment tasks contain key words that will help with your interpretation and analysis. The assignment task becomes easier to understand if you break the question down by looking for key words”. (QUT cite/write, 2015)

Instructions:
You will need to do both accountability and improvement for evaluation, you will need to define what do these two terms mean in regard accountability for evaluation and improvement for evaluation (Owen’s five forms). BIG hint not all of the form’s approaches apply both accountability and improvement for evaluation in their theory. Use the papers that you have found to demonstrate the application of theory (principles) in practice. This why the course is called principles and practices of evaluation 🙂
Read Owen’s chapters that have been defined (the course readings e.g. form and its approaches), it be come clear what is the relationship the forms and approaches has with either accountability and improvement or both for evaluation.
I have placed a “Comparative essay” lay out as an example,  up on the learn online to help people structure their essay.
Also, I think about going thru and allocating where you will place your words (word count) e.g. intro, body  and conclusion, this help you too, which structure.  Evaluation in planned and logical stepped processes, like this essay.

go into Owen’s book index and look up “accountability” and “improvement” (it will take you a bit into the next forms but it will help you).
Consider when you are reading that both accountability and improvement has many levels…..
e.g. accountability with effectiveness, with quality etc,
e.g. improvement with effectiveness, with access, with evidence used etc
There are many terms used in evaluation, I have place a few options of examples of evaluation term glossary on the learnonline under the “Textbook, Readings and Other Useful Resources” heading.
Below are four reasonable glossary which might wish to review.
1. Glossary of Key Terms in Evaluation and Results Based Management (2010) http://www.oecd.org/development/peer-reviews/2754804.pdf
2. UNAIDS Glossary Monitoring and Evaluation Terms – working daft http://www.unaids.org/sites/default/files/sub_landing/files/11_ME_Glossary_FinalWorkingDraft.pdf
3. USA Aid (2009) Glossary of Evaluation Term http://pdf.usaid.gov/pdf_docs/PNADO820.pdf
4. Government of Western Australia (2015) Evaluation Guide (Appendix A: Glossary of Evaluation Terms pp. 47 & 48) http://www.treasury.wa.gov.au/cms/uploadedFiles/Treasury/Program_Evaluation/evaluation_guide.pdf
But you might wish to find your own glossary and post on the forum.
Just a reminder, as the term research term is popping up a bit, in the writing. Evaluation is you/evaluator making a “judgement” of evaluand (object or thing. It does get blurry but if go to the simplest language terms – evaluation is about judging an evaluand and research is about finding a new fact/thing.
I have attached two ‘how to’ documents which will help you define and structure your essay a bit more.
You will need to decide on where you wish to allocate your words, you do have 2250 words, the body of the assignment is the main part, then the conclusion then the introduction. So over to you to allocate words base on the assignment.
