Mental Health Assessment

Ensuring confidentiality is maintained, develop two case studies from your clinical practice utilising the Mental State Examination to assess each of the following aspects of each person:
• Appearance
• Overt behaviour
• Attitude
• Speech
• Mood and affect
• Thinking (form and content)
• Perceptions
• Sensorium (alertness, orientation (person, place, time), concentration, memory (immediate, recent, long term), calculations, fund of knowledge, abstract reasoning.
• Insight
• Judgment
For both Case Studies, suggest what other assessment tool you might use to assist you in your assessment. Justify how this tool could assist you in your assessment.
For both Case Studies, write a paragraph on your overall impression of the consumer’s presentation. Remember to consider all aspects of personhood and your own position in the assessment.
In your current role as a mental health nurse, once you had undertaken this assessment, what would be your next step?

1) Please make the first case with Schizo-affective Disorder and the second one with Bipolar I Disorder.
