For many years fire chiefs have been the supreme leader of most fire departments. In some jurisdictions, however, the aspects of the fire department (everything other than commanding the firefighting forces at an incident, eg. finances, pokicies, etc.) are controlled by a Fire Commisioner or Fire Director.
