Murder is the purposeful, knowing, or reckless unlawful killing of another human being. As with other crimes, there are various categories of murder based on several considerations.

Tasks:

Define the following:
First-degree murder
Second-degree murder
Manslaughter
How does each category differ from one another?
Explain the mens rea required for each category.
Provide examples for each category, as well as at least one possible defense for each. Include an example of vehicular manslaughter, which is a common charge at the state level.
