PROMPT
Read the source texts as noted above.  Write an essay that responds to one of the following prompts.

“Bullet to the Brain” Tobias Wolff pp. 1356-1359
“Say Yes” Tobias Wolff pp. 1359-1362

Read each story. Select 1 that you want to write about.

If you write about “Bullet to the Brain” respond to this prompt:
Perform a close reading of this story.  Write an essay that explicates the passage re: the flashback.  Explain how this works in this story and then how it relates to the story as a whole.

If you write about “Say Yes” respond to this prompt:
Perform a close reading of this story.  Write an essay that explicates the passages re: the domestic chores.  Explain how these chores function in this story and then how these chores relate to the story as a whole.

A complete paper will include a brief introduction with thesis statement. You will want to use and explain evidence from each story. Make sure that all paraphrased and quote work from the text book is appropriately cited and credited.

DUE DATE:  IN CANVAS THURSDAY APRIL 9, 2015 6PM
•    Journal Assignments not turned in earn a zero.
•    Grades are based on effort and quality of work.  You are expected to spend time with this; to revise it.
•    While this is not a formal essay, this should be formatted as an essay in MLA format and include a beginning, middle, and end.
•    Date on this assignment supersedes the date on the syllabus.

LENGTH AND FORMAT
•    2.5 –3 word-processed pages.
•    MLA format. Use Times New Roman 12-point font (double spaced).
•    Please submit your assignment to Canvas. Additionally, bring a printed assignment to class to give to the instructor. The assignment is in the assignment section on Canvas.

AND SOME NOTES ON GRADING FOR ENCOURAGEMENT
•    A 2 point deduction will be made if the teacher has to print the essay for you.
•    A 1 point deduction will be made for improper formatting.
•    A 1 point deduction will be made for every grammar mistake past the second error. This includes improper use of transitions.

PURPOSE:
•    Demonstrate critical and independent thinking.
•    Recognize literary terms, concepts, critical strategies and stylistic characters in the texts studied.
•    To engage in the recursive writing process via a close reading.
•    Evaluate the power of literature to address personal values and goals and to challenge human endeavors.
