Our nation is built on a free-market system. The delivery of health care is no exception. The United States spends more per capita than others in the world without quality outcomes. It has been stated that the United States is behind in the efficient and timely delivery of care as well as that it is the responsibility of all stakeholders to find a resolution to the inefficiencies of the current health care system. Therefore, it is the responsibility of all stakeholders to ensure the delivery of quality health care in the most effective and efficient manner.

This week you will review the simulation titled, Cost, Quality and Access for Trevor, in Chapter 1.1 of your course textbook. Once you have completed reviewing each of the simulations,

Examine the concerns and issues within each simulation coming from each of the following stakeholder perspectives:
patient
family
health care professionals.
Determine what could have been done differently to address the issues identified in all the options in relation to cost, quality, and access

Using the timeline from the textbook, consider how the U.S. healthcare system has evolved over the past 50 years. Much of the evolution was due to the political landscape, societal constraints, consumer demand, escalating costs, and the advancement in technology. We have seen legislation and legal cases that have had a major influence on the health care system. Review the U.S. healthcare system timeline.

Choose one of the influencing factors from the timeline and discuss its impact on the system. Provide your rationale as to why you think it has been revolutionary in changing the system.

There are four specific reimbursement methods in our healthcare system. For this discussion, you will make your initial post on one of the four methods of reimbursement and will make responses to two of the other three methods of reimbursement threads. The reimbursement method you will be discussing in your initial post depends on the first initial of your last name. See the table below, then post an argument within your topic group that explains why your method of reimbursement is the best method for the U.S. healthcare system. You and each of your classmates will also post rebuttals to one person from two of the other methods – staying focused on the argument for your specific reimbursement method. For help, review the Understanding Insurance Models game in the Chapter 3 Summary section of your textbook.

Students with last names starting with “H are assigned to Method 1. Support fee-for-service throughout this discussion; submit rebuttals to two of the other Methods (2, 3, or 4).

Students with last names starting with “M are assigned to Method 2. Support capitation throughout this discussion; submit rebuttals to two of the other Methods (1, 3, or 4).

Students with the last names starting with “R are assigned to Method 3. Support pay-for-performance throughout this discussion; submit rebuttals to two other Methods (1, 2, or 4).

Students with the last names starting with “Z are assigned to Method 4. Support the value-based model throughout this discussion; submit rebuttals to two other Methods (1, 2, or 3).

To post your initial post, find your topic group above. Open that forum by selecting your assigned topic group and post your response. Then, visit the other topic groups to post your classmate responses. Two classmate responses are required, in which you will explain how the method you have been assigned is better than theirs. Keep in mind that you are taking a position on one of these methods, which you may or may not agree with personally.

Your original post should be at least 250 words with at least two scholarly sources that support your view. Your rebuttals should be at least 150 words with at least one scholarly source supporting your rebuttal.

Example: You are assigned to Method 1” fee-for-service. Your original post discusses why the fee-for-service model is best for the U.S. healthcare system. Your response posts will refute two of the other methods in the other topic groups by stating why fee-for-service is better than capitation, pay-for-performance, or the value-based model. You need to include justification for your response.

Method 1: Fee-For-Service (last names A-H)

A Day in the Life
Delivery of health care is provided in a variety of settings by a diverse group of health care professionals. Physicians and nurses comprise the majority of the health care workforce; however there are far more professionals that encompass the field of healthcare. Review the Healthcare Roles Gallery Tour to view numerous positions within the health care field.

Choose two professions in health care from Chapter 4. Do not select a physician or nurse. Research your chosen two careers further and tell a day-in-the-life story for both professionals. Within your story, identify two critical issues that this individual would face on their job.

Healthcare systems around the world provide different levels and types of care; funding foreign systems is dramatically different from the United States. Choose a country other than the United States, and research its health care system.

For this discussion, you will provide an overview on your selected countrys health care system. Â In your main response, address the following elements including consideration of your answers to the questions below:

Describe any foreign healthcare system by answering the following questions:
How do the people in the country access health care?
How do the citizens of the country pay for the health care?
What is the quality of the health care they receive? Are there unique services provided?
Describe some of the pros and cons of the system.
Identify at least two examples of similarities between your selected country and the U.S. healthcare system.
Differentiate between U.S. health care and the health care system of the country you chose by sharing at least two examples of how they are different.
You must use at least two scholarly or government resources besides your textbook in your research and response.

Look back to your own definition of the healthcare system posted in Week One. How would you define it now after studying health care throughout this course? Post both definitions and examine the differences.

Describe any potential reforms, research, suggestions for improvements, etc.
