QCQ Assignment Sheet

Task: “QCQ” is short for “Quotation, Commentary, Question,” an assignment that asks you to write down a quotation, comment at length on the quotation, and then conclude with a question.  You will be writing ten QCQs this semester, based on the reading assignments from Ways of Reading.

Quotation: Write the exact quotation at the top of the page (after your standard MLA heading information.) Use quotation marks and a parenthetical in-text citation. Your quotation should be between one and three lines long. It should also be thought-provoking in some way.

Comment: Your commentary should be the bulk of the QCQ (around 85%). For your commentary, consider the following if you’re stuck:

• What does this make you think of?
• Do you agree or disagree and why?
• How does this relate to other readings?
• Why did the author write this?
• How does the quotation interact with other parts of the text?

Question: Conclude with a question based on your quotation and commentary.

• Is there something here you do not understand (words, ideas, etc.)?
• Is there a question you would like to pose to the author?
• What is something (related to the reading in some manner) that you would like to discuss with the class?

Technical Details

Length & Format: Your QCQ should be no greater than one page in length, single spaced. Double-spacing is also allowed. Please follow MLA guidelines for margins, font size, and heading information.
