As you explore this week, you will realize that the criminal justice system comprises various components that are designed to work in conjunction with one another. However, these components often seem at odds with achieving their ultimate goal—providing a safe environment for the community. Some would even say that the criminal justice system is “seriously flawed.”
Based on the readings in your textbook, identify the major components within the criminal justice system. Then, answer the following:

• How does an individual who commits a crime formally enter the criminal justice system?
• What specific role does each of the criminal justice system components play in the administration of justice?
• Is the criminal justice system effective in carrying out its responsibilities?
• How can the criminal justice system be made more effective in addressing the growing crime problem within the United States?
