Please write a 3-4 paragraph response for EACH QUESTION.

(1)  Pick one of the individuals considered in the chapter on Christian Existence [Hamer/Bonhoeffer/Merton/Day] and tell me how his or her life stood in stark contrast to the 21st century culture’s dominant images of human fulfillment and happiness.  You will need to present some of those images and give examples from the life of the person you chose.  Deeper information about these four can be obtained easily on the web if you need more basic background in order to answer this question.  Avoid Wikipedia … unless you are desperate!  Please don’t use it as a quoted source.

(2)  Give me your definition of prayer.  Is it important to one’s life as a Christian?  Chapter 10 lists some “starting points” for prayer.  Do you find any of them appealing?  Why or why not?  If you are not a Christian but follow another faith, tell me something about the concept of prayer within your own religious background.

(3)  Christians have many different ideas about the end of the world and life after death.  Scripture itself is not unequivocal about the details of these events.  Define eschatology, apocalyptic, and parousia.  Then respond to the descriptions of the end time and the afterlife as presented in chapter 12, and tell me your own convictions about BOTH of these things.

(4)  Summarize the two basic positions taken by Christian theologians on the question of Jesus’ role in the salvation of ALL people.  Be sure to give the reasoning behind each position.  What is your own personal view on this?  If there is one God — then WHY are there so many religions?  And to quote Rodney King, (in a religious sense) post L.A. riots — “Why can’t we all just get along?”
