You must have access to this book: David Hume, Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion, ed. Richard H. Popkin, 2nd ed. (Indianapolis: Hackett, 1998).
Find one place in Hume’s Dialogues in which there is an argument, an objection to that argument, and a reply to the objection. Then answer the following questions:
• What are the steps in the argument (in your own words)?
• Does the objection contain multiple steps? If so, what are they (in your own words)?
• Which part of the argument does the objection attack?
o Does the objection attack one of the premises? If so, which premise?
o Does the objection attack the conclusion?
o Does the objection argue that one of the inferences in the argument is invalid?
• Does the reply to the objection contain multiple steps? If so, what are they?
• How does the reply attack the objection?
o Does the reply attack one of the objection’s premises? If so, which premise?
o Does the reply attack the objection’s conclusion?
o Does the reply argue that one of the inferences in the objection is invalid?
o Or is it the case that the objection is just a single statement and the reply simply argues against that statement?
• Based on your answers to these questions, do you think the argument is successful?
