Adult protective services.

In order for a referral to meet APS criteria for assignment, the person must be at least 18 years of age, have a mental or physical impairment that makes them more vulnerable than other adults and there must be an allegation of abuse, neglect/self-neglect or financial exploitation.

Please read each of these scenarios and think about what other information you may need to determine if the referral meets all three of these criteria.  please describe what other questions would you ask and why?

1.) An elderly woman lives in a home that is in deplorable conditions and should be condemned. She is a hoarder and she has 20 cats. She needs help but will not go into assisted living because of the cats. Referent would like for APS to help to get this woman into a home where she can receive better care.

2.) A mentally challenged adult who has behavior issues resides in a group home. Last night he had a behavioral episode and punched his caregiver. The caregiver automatically pushed him out of reflex and the mentally-challenged man fell to the floor and hit his head on the end table. Referent wants APS to investigate alleged abuse.
