A16 year old girl presented to her doctor complaining of abdominal pain and flu like symptoms. Her previous medical history included recent travel to Africa. On examination she was found to be jaundiced, had a fever and a tender enlarged liver. The results of her liver function tests were as follows:
Analysis Result Reference range Units
Total protein 69 (60 -80) g/l
Albumin 40 (35 – 80) g/l
Bilirubin 245 (0 -20) μmol/l
Alkaline phosphatase 300 (30 -130) IU/l
Aspartate aminotransferase 1932 (5 -50) IU/l
Gamma glutamyl transferase 280 (5 – 55) IU/l
Discuss the importance of each of these tests in the assessment of liver function and explain how you would arrive at a differential diagnosis for this patient.
