“Arts of the contact Zone” mary Pratt on the “autoethnographic” text
Guman Poma’s Chronicle is an instance of what i have proposed to call an autoethnographic text, by which i mean a text in which people undertake to describe themselves in ways that engage with representations others have made of them. Thus, if ethnographic text are thoes in whice European metropolitan subject represent to themselves their others (usually their conquered others) autoethnographic text are representations that the so-defined others construct in response to or in dialogue with thoes text…..[they] involve a selective collaboration with and appropiations of idioms that the metropolis of the conqueror. These are merged or infiltrated to varying degrees with indigenous idioms to creat self-representations intended to intervene in metropolitan modes of understandings…… such as text circits of print culture(501-02)

Of course, once you’ve decided on a passage/chapter you will reread your selection with arts if the contact zone in mind and be sure the passage/chapter is sutable for the task. Then go on to writing an essay that presents your selection as an example of autoethnographic or transcultural text. you should imagine that you are working on Pratts ideas to the test. add what you have to say about the speaker, the audience and purpose of the text
