Explain how you will enter, what you will say to the children in role as your character, examples of what the children might say in response, and how you will ‘leave’ or get out of character

For the next part of the assignment, there are three sets of instructions and you need to choose the option that fits with the age-group of the children you are designing your lesson for. The lessons show the developmental progression in drama in terms of what is appropriate for different ages.

Skill Teaching & Practice #2 (Kinder, Year 1 or Year 2): Leader-in-Role
• Read about Leader-in-role on pages 17-18 of the textbook, and also about status in the Process Drama Techniques document in Topic 2 of the drama Topic Notes
• View the 15 minute video on teacherstv showing how to use leader-in-role for learning Maths in Drama Topic 4: Across the Curriculum.
a) Using what you have learnt from the readings and viewings, design a leader-in-role activity directly related to your folk tale. To do this, follow the guidelines on pages 17-18 of the textbook and use one of the leader-in-role examples in the textbook chapters as a model for your own leader-in-role activity. Indicate which example you are using – write the chapter story title and referencing the page number (eg: Cinderella, page 55). With your leader-in-role activity, make sure there is a problem or a dilemma that the character is trying to solve.
b) Write a description of what you would do for this leader-in-role activity. Include the status of your character, how you will introduce the role to the children, how you will ‘set-up’ the role/s (the children might also be playing roles). Explain how you will enter, what you will say to the children in role as your character, examples of what the children might say in response, and how you will ‘leave’ or get out of character
c) As described in the textbook, include a document that you have prepared beforehand as part of your leader-in-role activity. Write this imaginary document out and include it in your assignment at the end of your leader-in-role activity
d) Include a sharing/reflective discussion after you come back as the teacher. Write 2 questions that you would use to initiate and guide this discussion around what happened in the activity. The discussion will be about the character that the children just encountered and what was said/done etc.
