What does this framing tell us about the role of video games in society, and about this new media form’s characteristics and relationship to its players?

1 Privacy: Governments for security and corporations for profit engage in surveillance practices in digital networks with evident disregard for individual privacy. Discuss and elaborate your thesis with examples.

  1. Digital media in a global context: What do ethnographic approaches contribute to our understanding of the impact of new technologies on local cultures?

3 Games: Review one example of how video games have been framed. What does this framing tell us about the role of video games in society, and about this new media form’s characteristics and relationship to its players?

  1. Gender: What are the differences between positivist, constructivist, critical, and postmodern conceptualization of gender? Consider their characteristics, and explain how one of these approaches would understand technology and gender identity using a case study (e.g. video games, etc.).

5. Health: On the basis of up-to-date academic sources, critically assess how seeking health related information online affects patients (positively and/or negatively). Give concrete examples from literature and online sources.

  1. Children: According to scholars, what are the main ‘risks’ associated with children/young people and media? To what extent do you think these risks are legitimate, or do you think children/young people have more agency than they are often ascribed?
  2. Mobile lives and emotion: Discuss the term ‘mobile lives’ with specific reference to the role of digital technologies, the ‘technological unconscious’ and ‘miniaturised mobilities’ in everyday emotional experience. (You will need to read Elliott and Urry to answer this question – they can however use a variety of examples from their own experience as illustrative examples).
