You work as a consultant for SafetyFirst, a company which specialises in providing safety solutions to organisations working in high risk industries. For the last few months you have been working closely with Sacred Heart Hospital to assess their safety culture. Based on an analysis of safety culture surveys and interviews with a sample of employees at Sacred Heart, it is clear that this organisation has a poor safety culture. Employees report that they have no time to act safely and frequently take risky short cuts with procedures. You have decided to submit a proposal to the head of department, Dr. Kelso, to implement a safety intervention at Sacred Heart. In previous meetings, Dr. Kelso has expressed some scepticism about the benefits of a safety intervention referring to the fact that accidents are at an all-time low. However, he is open to hearing evidence for changes which could make the hospital safer for the staff and patients.
