Pierre Bourdieu’s (1977) theories of cultural, social and symbolic capital and his notion of ‘habitus’ and ‘field’ will be used as a conceptual framework to further understand some of the reasons why social and cultural implications exist for Indigenous Australians who are a minority/disadvantaged group in Australia in relation to them participating in tertiary education to better understand how Indigenous Australians can be further supported to gain access to tertiary education.
