In the 20th century, the US relied upon an employer-based model of health insurance in the private sector and public health insurance for the elderly, poor and chronically ill. In the 21st century, we are moving into a post-employer-based insurance model that expands the obligations for insurance coverage beyond employers and the government to individual citizens to find a way to have insurance coverage and access to care.
Will this result in a return to consumer dominance in healthcare where individual patients will have more control more of the US healthcare system? Or will the era of government dominance continue where patients have less control over their healthcare than in the past?
How do you think that the role of the medical profession will change during this period of time as well? Will they have more or less autonomy over their role in the healthcare system?
