Core Reading (week 12)

Willis, Eileen M., Dwyer, Judith, Owada, Kei, Couzner, Leah, King, Debra, and Wainer, Jo (2011). Indigenous women’s expectations of clinical care during treatment for a gynaecological cancer: rural and remote differences in expectations. Aust. Health Review 35, 99–103. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/AH09800.

Summary

The article concentrated on the view of Indigenous ladies in regards to clinical watch over gynaecological cancer and the distinctions in desires of them living in remote and provincial regions. This paper highlighted the distinctions in the expectations of Aboriginal ladies when they were taking treatment for gynaecological cancer. To collect data for qualitative research, interviews had been directed in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Northern Territory in 2008. The members were 37 clinical labourers and 24 patients experiencing gynaecological cancer. Among them, three Indigenous ladies were living in rural population zone and six of the clinicians worked with Aboriginal ladies living in remote zones. Indigenous researcher had been assigned to contact with Indigenous ladies. After data collection, the gathered information had been analysed to highlight the resemblances and contrasts. A huge contrast had been seen between the impressions of ladies living in rural zones when contrasted with ladies living in remote regions. Ladies from rural regions had particular expectations from medical framework which incorporate fitting therapeutic consideration and flexibility to meet with family members. It is proposed that medical consideration changed socially from group to group particularly in between remote and rural areas.

Allocated Group Reading (week 12):

Russell, L. 2014 Chronic illness and disability, Sociology for Health Professionals, London: Sage, pp. 122-139.

Summary:

This reading has been selected from the recommended textbook of this course. It discusses the topic of chronic illness and disabilities. It is stated that experiences of chronic illness and disabilities highlighted the societal context in which symptoms and injuries happened. It was considered as poor genes or the result of incorrect or bad breeding. People without any disability were considered as superior and the people with disabilities or chronic disease. They were taken as rejected group of society as due to their illness, they were been isolated from other normal people. Moreover, discrimination is considered as one of the main social factor that made a huge impact on the health of people suffering from chronic illness and also disabled population. It is noted that chronically ill and disabled people are not passive victims but actively involved in making sense of their experiences and trying to find out new ways to manage their condition. Biomedical is considered as a pain relief for disabled people. It is suggested that it is important to have the knowledge about importance of management of chronic illness and disabilities.

Remember that you are responsible for providing other students with a comprehensive summary of the allocated Group Reading in your Reading Group discussion. Making the key points of the reading clear is important so that other students are able to judge whether they might wish to follow up on the reading further for their own learning and assessment.
