What are some techniques clinicians use to help clients see and feel things differently?

Selena, who is helped to overcome marianismo, and thus grows beyond the Latina women s willingness to put up with violence from men. But if this is a cultural norm for Latina women and their husbands, wouldn t multiculturalism suggest we respect it? In other words, please explain when you believe therapists should accommodate the cultural values of their clients, and when they should help clients transcend them.

This will tell you a little about the story of Selena and what is happening to her.
After Selina is successful in moving away from her relationship with her abusive boyfriend, she decides that she wants to help other women overcome what she refers to as marianismo (the female counterpart of machismo ), which she believes contributes to Latina women s willingness to put up with violence from men. She sets up a local educational program and eventually becomes a national Latina spokesperson. Damien, who attended the Million Man March, now reports a heightened sense of belonging, power, and responsibility, which led to a new commitment to be actively involved in parenting his young son. Sometimes working on behavior change leads to social action, as it did for Selina. At other times, social action can lead to personal behavior change, as it did for Damien.

As clients change their behaviors, learn new skills, or accomplish practical tasks, many aspects of their lives are affected. Not only behavior but perspective, emotions and feeling states, self concept, and achievement levels may all change, as all are interrelated. Sometimes people ask: Does changing one s perceptions change one s behaviors, or vice versa? Does changing one s behavior change one s mood, or vice versa? Does insight change behavior, or vice versa? We think that it does not matter so much which occurs first; what matters is that something occur, for we know that changes in any domain have a ripple effect on all others.
