TASK: Why do you believe Stassen chooses to depict Deogratias in the way that he does? Does he give a sympathetic or unsympathetic view of this central character? And how does this presentation of Deogratias affect your opinion of him, your view of others involved in the conflict, or your understanding of the crisis, the region, the culture, or even humanity at large?

SAMPLE Essay Skeleton: Essay #3
Thesis: While we may not find ourselves wholly sympathetic to Deogratias’ own struggles, J.P. Stassen’s authentic, unapologetic, and ultimately sympathetic portrayal of this young man helps us experience what it is like to be caught in the Rwandan conflict, where your only salvation comes from violence.

POINT/Topic Sentence 1

Early on, we dislike the Deogratias that Stassen creates for us. He is brash, immoral, and lustful.

POINT/

Topic Sentence 2

However, Deogratias becomes more complex, even forgivable for his earlier behavior due to his defense of his Tutsi friends.

POINT/

Topic Sentence 3

By seeing Deogratias interact with a series of unsavory yet powerful characters, we gain understanding that his actions are not his own; he is powerless amidst these forces.

POINT/

Topic Sentence 4

Stassen does not keep Deogratias from acts of violence, making us question our own ability to commit these actions.

POINT/

Topic Sentence 5

Depicting Deogratias as a dog, Stassen shows us that his loss of humanity is a result of his violent actions and guilt.

POINT/

Topic Sentence 6

Stassen makes Deogratias unapologetic for his crimes, and accepting of his fate, leaving us accepting of this reality as well.
