research Proposal

Guidance

At post graduate level an acceptable academic dissertation requires some contribution to knowledge. This therefore requres the student to review and summerise a body of existing literature. From this literature a research question can be developed. A methodology section must be included and provide details of a method to answer the question. A third element of the dissertation is the application and presentation of results.

Acceptable methods in accounting and finance will normally include the use of statistical methods and/or primary research involving questionnaires (or other means) or other secondary research that has a proven track record in prior literature. What is not aceptable would be untried methods or other techniques that is unrelated to the body of literature forming the dissertation.

Students must be aware that the research question must be feasible and therefore dissertations based on questionnaires or other methods must be sustainable, reliable and credible. Therefore a survay of a small number of observations may not constitute a reliable survey.

We receive a large number of dissertation topics that lack any substance or are simply unworkable. Therefore when you are to submit a topic you must refer to some existing literature and ideally propose a method to answer a given research question. Please do not submit a topic without these requirements. Please seek advise from one of the staff listed on this NILE site for further clarification if you are unsure if your topic is a workable dissertation

With reference to case study methodologies, such dissertations will only be acceptable when a case study approach is the most reliable method of investigation and the body of literature in the area of study has used similar approaches. A dissertation that involves a single case study will NOT be acceptable unless the NBS supervisor is satisfied that the student has access to sufficient research materials to complete a masters level dissertation. This will normally require a letter form the institution confirming that access will be permitted. The University will not take any responsibility for any shortfall in data. The case study methodology is normally refused unless the student is an employee of the organisation (for project based dissertations) or has corporate access to industry materials

The topics that staff are prepared to supervise are detailed on the staff area of this site. Please consult staff on suitable research areas before submitting your research topic
