Your job is to compare and/or contrast two religions studied in the course. When doing a comparison, you want to draw new and interesting parallels between the religions you’re writing about. These should be content oriented, meaning that you aren’t drawing comparisons that are obvious. For example, you can expect to score poorly if the depth of your analysis is that two religions started around the same time period and both came from Asia. I am interested in how the religious doctrines, tenets, practice, and holy teachings compare and contrast to one another.

The point is not to show that one religion is superior to another. The religions should be considered on equal grounds; if, for example, you write about a religion you believe in, you may not assume that the religion you believe in is correct and the others wrong. Rather, we are doing an honest, academic analysis. Most religions offer the same arguments for why that religion is true and correct. Our job in this paper is not to figure out which is right or to prove which is right. Our job is to compare and contrast the teachings of one religion with another.

Religions to be used in this paper are the Basongye religion of Africa, and the Shinto religion of Japan.
