Reason and Desire

Reason and desire impact differently in people’s lives. They control every aspect of a person’s undertakings at any one given moment because of the feelings which they potentially create. At times, the interplay of the two elements create different situations in life. Whereas the reason for doing something may make one do anything contrary to the expectations, the desire to do something always has a great impact in the life of a person. It controls how one will behave towards any act because it will always tend to create emotions. At the end of the day, Plato tries to justify that emotional undertakings together with reason have varied impacts because they create different environments. The charioteer is governed by both emotions shown through happiness and reason in order to drive the two horses. Whereas he is happy with one horse which is cooperative, the charioteer severally whips the uncooperative horse because of reason that it is not working to his expectations. Plato’s in this tale tries to argue that people have a reasons and desires in their undertakings.
A tale is told of a king who had two daughters. The wish of the king was that the two daughters get married to good families by responsible husbands. In such a case, happiness will prevail is the kind’s wish is granted. A failure for the king to have his daughters get married to families that he desires follows that he will be sad. This is because there is no guaranteed bright future for the kind’s daughters as he has always wished. All in all, being a story, events have to unfold as it is told. As the two daughters grew up in the palace, they because more beautiful, making many suitors come for their hand in marriage. However, such are situations in which critical decisions must be made, failure to which the consequences are grave.
However, one critical thing that came up in the life of the two daughters as they grow up into beautiful adult young ladies is the constant divergence of behavior. Whereas one of them had her behavior aligning towards the negative part, the other child developed a positive behavior. The two of them started showing significant differences that made the king so much surprised. This new turn of expectations created a different atmosphere that soon even the close friends and neighbors started worrying about. It was seen as a bad omen to have the kind with a child showcasing a bad behavior, more so because the royal family is expected to act as a role model for the whole society.
The kind’s worries reached optimum until he decided to act. He was damn sure that if her daughters do not get proper education on how to behave, then a big problem was set to emerge, causing many complications that may have questions than answers to comprehend. The unfolding of the behavior was evident even as suitors streamed into the palace to request for the king’s daughters hand in marriage. The king prepared her daughters well on how to handle their visitors, give them a hospitable welcome, and if need be, give them their word on the issue of marriage. One by one they came.
Each visitor got a different experience while in the palace. One of the daughters acted like the bad horse while the other was like the good horse. News reached the king, who in this tale acts like the charioteer. The bad daughter developed a tendency of treating the visitors with animosity. She prided herself due to the fact that she came from the loyal family, using various reasons to dismiss the suitors. According to her, none of them seemed worthy before her, not even one had the right qualifications to marry her. What would the king do in order to save his image from the bad daughter?
On the other hand, the good daughter made efforts to welcome all the visitors who came to see her. She was warm to them, hospitable and of good character. Word also reached the king about her good behavior. The king was happy because he was sure that the good daughter could do much to maintain his loyal image, besides making a good wife whom everybody would envy. However, one big problem that surrounded the palace is the irritating behavior that the bad daughter exhibited in public.
Discipline was considered critical during the time of the story. However, the king always preferred to use the word of mouth for correcting bad behaviors as opposed to the use of physical discipline. He took it upon himself to educate his daughters on the importance of exhibiting exemplary behaviors. The two daughters seemed as if to listen carefully, the thereafter, the bad daughter continued with her bad behavior. At this point, the king lost control and decided to act, because the situation was going out of hand. In any case, it was tarnishing the king’s image.
On one particular day, the king decided to motor her daughters movements closely when visitors came. Immediately the the visitors left, he called the two daughters and asked them how they behaved. However, he did not wait for an answer from them. He immediately went on to commend the good daughter for showing a relatively good behavior and treating the visitors with utmost respect. He also urged him to continue the way because only good behavior was able to guarantee her a goo future with the husband of her choice. However, the king decided to punish the bad daughter condemning her for her for the bad behavior she exhibited that involved hurling insults at potential suitors.
