reading response for “everyday use”

It is easy to read the character of Dee as the antagonist in Walker’s “Everyday Use” and her mother and sister as victims of her aggression or thoughtlessness. Are there any aspects of the story, though, that complicates such a reading? Schmoop.Com in “Everyday Use Characters” gives a very well-balanced reading of Dee’s character, but ends up finding her fairly unsympathetic overall. See whether you can come up with some more ways to understand Dee’s motivations that might make her easier to sympathize with.
