WRITING ASSIGNMENT:
Begin after lecture over formal analysis, or after week of 2/03.  For this assignment you must visit an art museum, art gallery, or art exhibition.  It must be a visit during this semester of study and not from a previous time and experience.  You must look at original works of art and not reproductions or student’s works.  This paper is required for completing the class.  CSU Honor Pledge is followed regarding plagiarismDocument sources properly.  The paper is worth ten points possible that are added to your total points at the end of the semester.  Include the following three segments.

Description;  Explain about the artwork in general.  Tell where the exhibition is located, what type of artwork, time period, name of the artist, etc.  Include general background information about the exhibit.

Analysis;  Choose one work of art and discuss it in detail.  Give the artist’s name, title of the artwork, medium, style, etc.  Analyze the artwork based upon its visual, intellectual, and emotional aspects.  Explain in detail how the artwork communicates its ideas/feelings.

Comparison;  Tell in depth how this artwork compares to another time period, movement, or artist that we have discussed in class.  Explain in depth how and why it compares.  You may not compare, for example, a Renoir painting to Impressionism because a Renoir painting is an Impressionist painting.  You must make a comparison to another time period and style and attempt to make connections between past and present or vice versa.

Format:      Typed, double-spaced, approximately two pages in length.  Your full name, CSUstudent I.D. number, and class section at the top of the page. (You may attach your ticket stub or small brochure from your visit if you wish, it is not required.)

Date Due:  Tuesday, April 7.  Also noted in calendar information within this syllabus.  Papers must be turned in on date due in hard-copy form , emailed papers not accepted.  Any paper turned in late will result in five points deducted from your final grade points total.  Late papers will not be accepted after the last regular class meeting.
