Public selves and private selves

Most people recognize and live with the difference between their public

selves and their private selves. Sometimes, however, those selves come

into conflict. Then, individuals must make a choice. Which self will triumph? Which self will be sacrificed? Can a compromise be found? These choices can sometimes be matters of life and death. When he wrote The Crucible, Arthur Miller said, “There were moments when an individual conscience was all that could keep the world from falling apart.”
