Program Planning and Reflection

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to provide the student with an opportunity to
reflect on interests in Infant/Toddler Care and Education and to plan further growth.
Course Learning Objectives addressed in this assignment:
CLO#1 – Analyze the essential policies, practices, quality indicators, and delivery systems of
quality infant and toddler programs.
CLO#4 – Evaluate infant and toddler curriculum and environments.

Planning Instructions
1. You are going to reflect and plan on two (2) of the six categories of program
guidelines described in Chapter 6 of (CDE, 2006), They are:
 Section 1 – Providing Family-Oriented Programs, pp 56-60 (CDE, 2006)
 Section 2 – Providing Relationship Based Care, pp 61-65 (CDE, 2006)
 Section 3 – Ensuring Health and Safety, pp 65-71 (CDE, 2006)
 Section 4 – Creating and Maintaining Environments for Infants and Toddlers,
pp 72-77 (CDE, 2006)
 Section 5 – Engaging in Program Development and Commitment to
Continuous Improvement, pp 78-81 (CDE, 2006)
 Section 6 – Helping Teachers to Grow Professionally, pp 82-86 (CDE, 2006)
2. You will also integrate the readings, the California ECE Competencies and the 10
principles from Gonzalez-Mena 2015. These include:

Detailed Format and Instructions
Write five to eight (5-8) pages about your reflection and plans
For each of your two categories, use the following format:

Providing Family-Oriented Programs
Provide an introductory paragraph that explains why you chose this particular section of
the guide. Then, for each of your two selected categories, you will reflect, describe obstacles
and opportunities, and make plans for growth in the category.
Reflection
What is your personal reaction to the expectations in your chosen sections? Do you feel
that it would be easy or difficult to meet the expectations and standards expressed in the
sections? Why? Why you are interested in this area? What do you wonder about? What do
you know that you didn’t know before? Describe your obstacles and opportunities for
growth. Describe what you would like to learn.
Plans and Strategies
Here you will describe your action plan for growth in this area. The plan will consist of at
least two strategies you plan to implement which address your areas of growth. The
strategies should be from the course materials, or backed up by the course materials.
Address at least two aspects of this guideline category that you wish to improve. How will
you address them? Describe your strategies in detail. Explain your rationale and back up
your strategies with citations.
Integration and Research
ECE Competencies
Reflect on one ECE Competency area that you feel is related to your strategies. Which
Performance Area and Topic areas are most interesting and applicable to you and your
plans? Identify one or two Topics and describe how your growth in those topics. Be specific
about the competency context within which you are choosing to work. How will you engage
in continuous improvement in this topic or topics? Include rationale.
The word Topic refers to specific topics within a given Performance Area under a
specific ECE Competency. For example on page 38 of (CDE, 2012) you will find
ECE Competency Area: Family and Community Engagement
Performance Area 1: Communication with Families
Topic: Communication Strategies
The topic is further divided into competency contexts. You will need to indicate
which competency context within which you are working.
10 Principles
Find two or three of the 10 Principles (Gonzalez-Mena, 2015) that integrate with your plan.
How do these principles inform your work? How will you integrate them into your plan?
Describe how the principles become actions through your strategies. Use examples and
back up your assertions with citations.
References
Write out all references used (at least 4) in APA format, on a separate page.
