Professional Impact Briefing

Description:
You work in the military or in a government organisation. Your superior has asked you to write a two to three – page (15
00 word) briefing on an important Asia Pacific security topic.Your briefing should be written in such a way as to be very clear, punchy, accessible and to outline the main pertinent points.

You need to provide a clear assessment of an issue and recommendations for action. Your briefing should be written in a very well informed and academically rigorous manner. However, as space is limited, you do not have to include an executive summary or any footnotes. Neither do you need to use any direct quotations. You are expected to provide a list of sources that you have taken your information from, but you do not need to provide any in text references of any kind.

However, it is important that you communicate a clear understanding of the main issue at hand, and this means that you may need to contrast one source with another i.e. “information from X contradicts the evidence from Y, and on balance it is thus suggested that…”. You do not need to use references, but you do need to use sources.

You have one of two choices for the subject of your professional
briefing:

1.Your superior has asked you to consider the strategic options available for Australia to pursue in regard to the maritime disputes over claims in the South China Sea . You have been asked to consider three issues: 1. State briefly what strategy claimants have adopted in regard to the disputed territories, and whether it is consistent with their wider security strategy in the Asia Pacific, 2. State whose strategy has been the most effective and why, 3. State your assessment of the likely outcome of this dispute, and the strategic options available for Australia.

2.Your superior has asked you to consider the likely outcome of the spread of so called Islamic State (IS) influence through the region. In particular, you have been asked to consider how Asia-Pacific states will react to the emergence and spread of groups affiliated to IS within their territory . You have been asked to consider three issues: 1.Choose a state or number of states that you will focus on (as the question is hypothetical, this is up to you), 2. State how these states will most likely react to the emergence of IS influence, and how their neighbours may also react, 3. State your assessment of the likely outcome on Australia , and the strategic options Australia has to ensure its security and interests in the region
