Introduction: This week’s lab will be conducted at a place of your choosing. Your
goal is to demonstrate your knowledge of relative motion, speed, velocity, and the
proper use of metric units. You will be required to estimate distances,
displacements, and time intervals. All measurements need to be given in metric
units. If you feel incapable of conducting this experiment on your own, additional
instruction will be provided at your request.
Procedure: Pick at starting point and an ending point for your motion. Your motion
may include walking, running, riding a bike, or any other means of transportation.
It can be conducted in any setting. See content for examples.
Answer all parts of all of the questions.
1. Describe your initial position and your final position. Define your reference
point. What is included in your reference frame? How do you know that those items
are part of your reference frame?
2. Estimate the distance that you traveled. If you lay on the floor/ground your
height can be estimated to be 1.5m. If you are in a car, you can use the odometer
to keep track of how far you went. For other modes of transportation, use your
best judgment when estimating distance.
3. Calculate your total displacement. (Final Position minus Initial Position, or

took to go from your initial position to your finial position. What was your

accessories, Paint), draw your motion labeling your initial position, your final
position, and your displacement. Make a box in the upper left corner of the
picture with your total time for the motion. Since the example shows zero
displacement, you are required to show an example where there is a positive
