Student Instructions:
The process of achieving an industrial project follows several well defined and accepted steps.  The HN Graded Unit alludes to those in terms of what is required.

You should read the descriptor for this Unit and consider satisfying the following instructions to achieve a pass.

General Project Milestones:

1.    Preliminary discussions with customer to establish the nature and scope of desired product/service.
2.    Outline proposal defining a range of targeted options that would satisfy the discussions of (1).
3.    Prototype design/solutions and outline working solution for an agreed option from (2) and preparation of draft contract.
4.    Preparation of working solution for contractual acceptance and agreement of contract.
5.    Manufacture and delivery of product/service to contract.
6.    Review and appraisal of how the product/service is/is not meeting customer requirements as contracted.
7.    Preparation of paperwork for legal aspects, health and safety, manufacturing/service delivery schedules, maintenance support plans and/or manuals.
8.    Commercial evaluation of project.

The HNU requirements have been tabulated below to assist you in checking that your work meets at least the minimum requirements.  As you will see the above industrial process is simplified into 3 key stages in the Descriptor:

•    Stage 1:    Producing an action plan.
•    Stage 2:    Showing evidence of development methodology.
•    Stage 3:    Preparing and submitting a report to show evaluation of the         project.

You should provide documentary evidence of each stage in addition to your final report.  This evidence can take the form of Minutes of Meetings (with your Supervisor), development Research Notes (citation of books, websites/articles, professional papers and your own thinking/deliberation), laboratory Test Results, etc, etc., and of course your final Report.

Assessment Task
The assessment task is a project and must be based on a complex task.

The chosen project must include evidence of use of knowledge gained in the following course subjects:

•    DP9M 34 Science Industry: Key Issues
•    F52Y 34 Petroleum Engineering: Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry
•    F530 34 Petroleum Geology and Geophysics: An Introduction
•    F533 34 Petroleum Reservoir Engineering: An Introduction
•    F52X 34 Oilfield Drilling Techniques and Operations: An Introduction

The project may consist of one of the following:

•    appraisal of an existing petroleum engineering technology application
•    appraisal of an existing petroleum engineering system
•    feasibility study of a technical issue or proposal
•    laboratory investigation
•    a combination of the above

Assessment Evidence

In addition to the following tables you must:

•    keep a project log book
•    construct and maintain a project schedule
•    prepare a project report
•    present this report by a specified date

Assessment Grading

The project will be marked out of 100. With a pass being 50%.  A grade will be allocated as follows:

A    =    70% – 100%
B    =    60% – 69%
C    =    50% – 59%

Awarded in three stages as follows:

•    Planning        20  marks
•    Developing        60  marks
•    Evaluating        20  marks

The candidate must achieve all of the minimum evidence specified above in order to pass the Planning stage.  (20% of final mark)

3    Provide a record/portfolio of the processes underpinning the project activity.  Evidenced by:

•    A completed and dated log book.
•    Progress reports.
•    Test results or investigative findings as part of the verification process.
3    Show evidence of compliance with Health, Safety and Environmental requirements.
The candidate must achieve all of the minimum evidence specified above in order to pass the Developing stage.  (60% 0f final mark)

The candidate must achieve all of the minimum evidence specified above in order to pass the Evaluating stage.  (20% of final mark)

In Addition to the above your Evaluation Report should follow international practice and convention in layout and format.  BS 4811 provides a reasonable basis for achieving this layout.
