1. Re-read the poem that has been selected.
2. Reflect on any gaps or silences in the text.
3. Determine what you know about the character whose persona you must adopt.
4. Develop a “voice” for this character.
5. Brainstorm ideas to “fill in a gap”, keeping in mind the narrative you create must NOT be told in the poem. Use your skills of inference and interpretation to do this.
6. Ensure your story relates to a specific event or experience; avoid writing the story of the character’s life.
7. Decide how your narrative will reflect or challenge the invited reading of the poem.
8. Consider the ways in which this character may have been marginalised (by society or by the poem itself) and how you might reflect this in your narrative.
9. Develop relevant ideas, considering at all times the ideology you feel your character would possess (and that of other people to whom you may refer).
10. Consider how best to convey the values, attitudes and beliefs that you wish to highlight in your text.
11. Draft your text, ensuring you have created a story that is not told in the poem and that you have revealed your character’s ideology and experience of marginalisation.
12. Proof read and edit your work before submitting your draft.
13. Make necessary changes in response to feedback given by your teacher.
14. Submit final copy, teacher marked draft, planning and brainstorming notes, and task sheet by due date.
