Issue Profile

Assignment Instructions:
In the issue profile you will examine the state of an issue that is important to your community.

You will write an essay in which you describe, analyse, synthesis the thinking of various sources on a particular issue that (1) you feel is a significant problem or potential problem and deserves more attention than it is getting or (2) is intrinsically formative of your local community/culture (a particular custom, ritual or practice.

It must be between 1,250 to 1,500 words and in MLA. No outside sources.

MY INSTRUCTIONS: – WHAT TO WRITE ABOUT:
Please follow the instructions above. For my assignment I want you to write about disabilities and how it is an issue in Qatar because not many people are aware of it. People with a certain disabilities are told to keep quiet about it. I want you to include a personal link to me because I suffer from a long term disability. I’m blind in my right eye and it causes a lot of pain, I read slow, I can’t really tell distance or depth, I can’t see from far and anything in small print is hard for me to read. It causes a lot of headaches for me. At age 12 I was kicked out of school for failing English class. I failed because I could never finish my readings and exams on time and as a result I failed a class that I was required to pass. I was always scolded by my teacher to read faster but I couldn’t. I never told anyone about my optic disability because growing up in Qatar families and people around us talked about them badly and people always said you should never talk about it. My issue profile essay is about disabilities and how people should speak up and seek help for whatever disability they have. After I visited my doctor Mario in Italy and came back to Qatar, he encouraged me to tell my teachers about it and seek help for it. As a result I got accommodations for my disability in school and as a result my performance in school got a lot better and my grades got higher. I learned that I wasn’t a bad student, I just did not have the opportunity to show people my full capabilities. Also mention how there are some people who have different disabilities that people may not necessarily know about like “invisible disabilities” whether it is speech issues, visual issues, anxiety, hearing issues but they don’t tell anyone about it and as a result start doing badly. (Mention it like “I know someone else who had (any invisible disability like speech impairment)and failed all their presentation because he never told anyone about it. Talk about how the community in Qatar should change its outlook on disabilities and that they should encourage people with these problems to ask for help and get the accommodations they deserve. Mention how there are minimal opportunities for people with disabilities to seek help but they should try to provide more care and facilities for people like that. Also mention how universities in Qatar who are run under US law do in fact help and assist people with disabilities as well as the non-profit organisation named Mada which is a non-profit organization dedicated to connecting people with disabilities to the world of information and communication technology. However, Qatar should still change its negative outlook on disabilities and encourage people with these issues to speak out and try to get the help they deserve to make sure they are successful in life. Also mention how I thought i was a bad student but after getting help and accommodations in school I realised that I was actually a good student, I just never got the opportunity to show my full potential but after getting accommodations like e-books, extra time in exams, breaks to rest my eye, have someone read to me, I managed to do well and show others that I can infect do well in school. As a result, I got the grades that reflected my ability and got accepted to Northwestern University in Qatar.
Mention my story and also come up with stories of people I know that had one or two issues with disability and how they were restricted because or it. Just to show how important this issue is and how the country should provide help and how the community should look at people with disabilities in a good light and encourage them to seek the help that they’re entitled to instead of making them feel bad about it and hiding it from the public.
