INTERPRETATION OF LYRIC
Chose a sentence from de Man’s essay, “Lyric and Modernity,” which you think offers a particularly fruitful insight into a central issue in reading lyric poetry. Make this sentence the title of your paper. Then, select one of the works we have discussed in class prior to spring break. Using the de Man essay, “Lyric and Modernity” as a guide, explore the ways in which the poem you have chosen can be said to be modern or belong to modernity. Pay close attention to the language of the poem, weigh its words and syntax carefully. Pay special attention to how these writers are as concerned if not more concerned with how an image or idea or phrase is presented rather than simply rest with what those images, ideas or phrases represent. Everything you say should be derived from close attention to the poem’s language. Avoid generalizations, be specific, make your paper detailed. The de Man essay may be discussed as part of your paper but make sure the dominant emphasis is on the poem you have selected.
