To successfully complete this assignment you must provide a brief synopsis of the text and answer the questions at the bottom of this page in a three to four page essay. Do not answer each question individually. All questions should be integrated into one coherent essay—students are not required to answer each question in the exact order they appear but to create an essay that addresses all of the questions.

Essays must be typed, double-spaced, 12-point font (preferably Times New Roman or Calibri), and have one-inch margins. Papers should have the following single-spaced heading: Student Name, Date, “Broken Spears Writing Assignment” (each on a separate line and two spaces between the heading and the start of the essay). Any deviation from the formatting described here will result in a loss of points; as will the failure to fulfill the page requirement (at least 3 full pages of text). Excessive grammar and spelling mistakes will also result in a loss of points.

The essay grade is divided into two sections: a technical component and a content component. The technical grade is made of items such as formatting and structure; does the paper have an effective introduction and conclusion; is there an identifiable thesis statement; does the author provide a significant synopsis of the text? The second component, the content component, will rest on the argument presented by the student: does the paper adequately address all aspects of the question(s)? Is the argument coherent and consistent? Has the student presented adequate evidence to support his/her argument? Remember, direct quotations should be limited in number and length. All quotations require a citation; all paraphrasing and summarization should also have a citation.
