Guided Reading Lesson Plan.

For the second part of the assignment – the essay – you are required to write in academic prose. This part of the assignment builds on the writing skills addressed in EAB510. In your essay, make sure you cover the following:
• Describing – What happens in your lesson?
• Explaining – How does it happen?
• Justifying – Why have you designed your lesson in this way?

To assist us to provide you with feedback, please use 1.5 line spacing in your essay.

The essay requires you to do some independent reading. High marks will only be awarded to essays that display evidence of extensive reading, a high level of comprehension of the reading, and skill in applying ideas gleaned from the reading. There is no set number of readings; you will be marked on the use you make of the readings you choose, not the number of readings. This means that evidence of depth of understanding of a few readings would score better than superficial treatment of many readings. Please complete the readings set each week and complement these with additional readings to strengthen your work. Some of the additional readings should be about the four resources model and some should be about the aspect of comprehension you are teaching in your lesson.
2. Q: How might I structure my essay?
A: Your marker will not be looking for a particular structure; any well-structured essay that meets the assignment requirements will do well. However, you might like to consider the following points:
• Introductory paragraph – tell the reader what you’re doing in the essay. What’s the argument or thesis you are making?
• Define comprehension and the type of approach to comprehension you did [use technical terms + 4 resources language].
• Describe the learners for whom you planned the lesson, highlighting their linguistic and literacy needs/strengths. Use technical terms from First Steps or the EAL/D Teacher Resource.
• Describe your lesson – [ie. It is a Guided Reading; it looked at X type of comprehension by doing XXXX.] Make sure you use technical language].
• Explain how the lesson would proceed.
• Justify why this lesson should contribute to the literacy development of the students for whom you planned.
• Conclude – go back to your introduction. What did you set out to do? How have you done.
