Genocide and The Descendants.

When we think of the Holocaust we often do not think of the survivors and their offspring…their legacy. We tend to immediately and rather obviously think first of the horrific acts of genocide and all of those who perished during these years. As a human services professional, you will more than likely encounter maybe not a Holocaust survivor, but a child, grandchild, or even great-grandchild of a survivor or someone who perished during this tragedy. Read Chapter 10 of the required text. Let’s image that you are a human services professional and are the grandson or granddaughter of a Holocaust survivor. You were raised hearing the stories, the atrocities, and the triumphs from your grandparent, and also have been led to believe that all Nazis and their descendants are “bad” people. You are going to Germany for a few months to work as a locum tenens on a military installation and are more than likely going to encounter a German fellow employee or a German spouse of an active duty member with historical family ties to a Nazi.

Describe how you will
work to change your thinking? What are some steps that you can take? How will you begin the enculturation process for yourself to overcome the anger you feel because of what your Jewish grandparent endured many decades ago?
